Working Memory and lexical ambiguity resolution in Chinese

چکیده

Two cross-modal priming experiments were conducted to examine the underlying mechanism of lexical disambiguation process was in activational nature or in inhibitory approach. In experiment one, forty native Cantonese listeners were recruited to participate in two tasks (1) a Chinese version reading span task (Daneman & Carpenter, 1980) to measure their WM capacity and (2) a cross-modal priming task (Yip, 2015). In experiment two, another group of native Mandarin listeners were recruited to participate in the same two tasks in Mandarin. The results revealed that sentence context had an early effect on the disambiguation processes for both highand low-WM span groups and the underlying mechanism of the disambiguation process for the high-WM span group seemed to be in an inhibitory nature.

Semantic Priming Effect on Relative Clause Attachment Ambiguity Resolution in L2

This study examined whether processing ambiguous sentences containing relative clauses (RCs) following a complex determiner phrase (DP) by Persian-speaking learners of L2 English with different proficiency and working memory capacities (WMCs) is affected by semantic priming. The semantic relationship studied was one between the subject/verb of the main clause and one of the DPs in the complex D...

An investigation of working memory influences on lexical ambiguity resolution.

The present study employed a combined semantic judgment and lexical decision priming paradigm to examine the impact of working memory on the inhibitory processes of lexical ambiguity resolution. The results indicated that overall, participants activated one meaning of a presented homograph while not priming the alternative meaning. As hypothesized, participants with high working-memory spans ex...

Relative Clause Ambiguity Resolution in L1 and L2: Are Processing Strategies Transferred?

This study aims at investigating whether Persian native speakers highly advanced in English as a second language (L2ers) can switch to optimal processing strategies in the languages they know and whether working memory capacity (WMC) plays a role in this respect. To this end, using a self-paced reading task, we examined the processing strategies 62 Persian speaking proficient L2ers used to read...

Children's use of language context in lexical ambiguity resolution.

Lexical ambiguity resolution was examined in children aged 7 to 10 years and adults. In Experiment 1, participants heard sentences supporting one (or neither) meaning of a balanced ambiguous word in a cross-modal naming paradigm. Naming latencies for context-congruent versus context-incongruent targets and judgements of the relatedness of targets to the sentence served as indices of appropriate...

Gesture and its impact of resolving lexical ambiguity

The study aimed to shed light on the use of gesture in resolving lexical ambiguity employed by TEFL students. To this end, 60 intermediate Iranian learners, studying at Kish Way Language School in Iran were recruited. The participants were randomly put into two experimental groups and one control group. Both of the experimental groups received the same teaching approach, i.e. teaching homonyms ...
